The main purpose of this event which was held in West Kempsey on Sunday 20th May 2023 with over 40 people in attendance, was to showcase to the public the link between beekeeping, pollination and food security.

This was successfully demonstrated by the attendance of industry leading experts in presenting the medicinal properties of honey by Dr Lamorna Osborne and Bruce White OAM discussed the link between beekeeping, pollination and food security.

The events also highlighted the opportunities available for careers in the Bee Keeping Industry.

Melissa Wortman from Agrifood ITAB, discussed traineeships, studying beekeeping opportunities and careers in beekeeping.

Bruce White OAM, one of Australia’s leading beekeeping experts, also carried out an introduction to beekeeping and also a hands on beekeeping experience including actual opening up of two hives for delegates to experience beekeeping.

Feedback on the day was extremely positive with numerous comments received regarding increased understanding of the link between beekeeping, pollination and food security. Also beekeeping as a career was well received and a number of delegates are keen to follow up on next steps for a career in beekeeping.

A special thanks to TAFE NSW – West Kempsey Campus, Manning Valley Amateur Beekeeper’s Association and the ANZ Bank for their funding for this event.
